Do you ever have days where you notice your mind running towards negative thoughts? I’m getting better at catching myself out when I dive into negative thinking but I still think it's a daily practice of monitoring our thoughts and choosing which ones we focus on.
I wanted to share a favourite story of mine that relates to this challenge. It’s an old story of two wolves and I think it’s so powerful and really sums up how important it is to be mindful of the thoughts we allow each day...
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’’
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
It’s all about the personal battles that we all face. The battle between good and evil, between the encouraging thoughts and the negative and self destructive thought patterns we adopt, between the path we choose and the righteous path that is already chosen for us when we come into this world.
This story is a reminder to consciously CHOOSE to be kinder to ourselves and to others.
